Carbon L1

The Carbon L1 is a DLP 3D printer from Carbon with a 400 x 250 x 460 mm build volume.

The Carbon L1 is a DLP 3D printer from Carbon with a 400 x 250 x 460 mm build volume.

Specifications

Light Engine (DLS)

Carbon L1 uses the proprietary Digital Light Synthesis (DLS) process: a 385 nm UV DLP projector firing upward through an oxygen-permeable (CLIP) FEP window. The oxygen dead zone (~30–50 µm above the window) prevents polymerization immediately adjacent to the window, enabling continuous Z-travel without discrete layer pauses. Pixel size: 160 µm.

Build Volume

400 × 250 × 460 mm: Carbon's largest Z-travel, accommodating full-scale helmets and automotive panels in a single build.

Platform

Precision Z-motor build platform; documented Six Sigma repeatability ±40 µm for serial production. Requires rigid industrial floor installation and dedicated ventilation.

Calibration

CLIP Window Calibration

Regular inspection for contamination, scratching, or damage. A contaminated window is the primary cause of delamination on the L1.

Build Platform Levelling

Carbon-certified Z-zero procedure; check parallelism at four corners (tolerance ±0.05 mm).

Material Profile Verification

Each resin and batch verified against the Carbon Platform profile before starting: green status is mandatory.

Test Print.

Common defects

Layer Separation (Delamination)

Primary cause: contaminated CLIP window or depleted resin. Fix: clean with Carbon-approved solvent, replace resin, update profile.

Warping

On flat parts with insufficient supports and low UV dose in base layers. Fix: increase supports, add burn-in layers, enable resin vat heating.

Suction Cupping

On solid closed geometries without drainage holes. Fix: add minimum 2 mm drainage holes, reduce Z-lift speed.

Insufficient Post-Cure Hardness.

What it is used for

Serial Production of Sports Accessories

Riddell NFL helmets and Adidas midsoles are real L1 production deployments: validated manufacturing precedents.

Full-Scale Automotive Prototypes

Build volume accommodates full interior panels in a single print without splitting.

Medical Devices (ISO 13485).
