The Nobel 1.0 is an SLA 3D printer from XYZprinting with a 128 x 128 x 200 mm build volume.

Specifications

The XYZprinting Nobel 1.0 is an early consumer-grade SLA (Stereolithography) 3D printer. Unlike FDM machines that melt plastic filament, the Nobel 1.0 uses liquid photopolymer resin that is selectively cured by a UV laser beam. This printer was engineered to bring high-resolution resin printing to jewelers, dentists, designers, and hobbyists at a fraction of the cost of industrial machines. However, operating the printer requires strict adherence to safety protocols, precise manual calibration, and detailed post-processing steps.

  • Build Volume: The physical build envelope is 128 mm (X-axis) by 128 mm (Y-axis) by 200 mm (Z-axis).

Calibration

Successful printing on the XYZprinting Nobel 1.0 requires careful preparation and an understanding of photopolymer chemistry. Follow these eight detailed calibration steps:

  • Z-Axis Zero Alignment (Build Platform Leveling): Loosen the lock screws on the aluminum build platform. Place the factory-provided calibration sheet on the bottom of the dry resin vat. Lower the platform to its home position, apply even downward pressure by hand, and tighten the lock screws in a cross pattern.

Common defects

  • Hardware defects and mechanical weaknesses
  • PDMS Clouding and Vat Wear: The silicone (PDMS) lining on the bottom of the vat degrades over time under exposure to the UV laser.
  • Symptoms: Prints fail repeatedly in the same area of the bed; cured resin adheres to the bottom of the vat instead of the build platform.
  • Causes: Photolytic degradation of the silicone layer due to concentrated UV laser exposure.
  • Solutions: Replace the vat.

What it is used for

  • Jewelry Design and Investment Casting: Using castable resins, the Nobel 1.0 produces high-resolution ring and pendant patterns that burn out without leaving ash residue.
  • Orthodontic and Dental Models: The 25-micron layer resolution allows the printer to produce highly accurate dental arches for vacuum-forming aligners.
