Independent Dual Extrusion (IDEX Kinematics)

The WEEDO X40 is a Cartesian FDM 3D printer featuring an Independent Dual Extruder (IDEX) system. Unlike standard dual-extruder systems where both nozzles are mounted on a single carriage, IDEX uses two independent printhead carriages riding on the same X-axis linear rail. Each carriage is driven by its own stepper motor and belt. This setup supports five printing modes:

• Single Mode: Prints using either the left (E0) or right (E1) nozzle while the idle head is parked off-screen.
• Dual-Color Mode: Prints two-color parts using the same material without requiring a purge tower, saving time and filament.

Calibration

IDEX systems require precise alignment to ensure both nozzles print in sync across the X, Y, and Z axes. Follow these calibration steps:

• Mechanical Z-Axis Offset Calibration:

If the two nozzles sit at different heights, the idle nozzle will scrape the printed part or detach it from the bed.

• Expected result: Both nozzles are positioned at the same height relative to the bed (within 0.02 mm).
• Tip: Loosen the mounting screws on the right hotend (E1).

Common defects

• Hardware defects and mechanical weaknesses
• Idle Nozzle Collision (Nozzle Scrape):
• Symptoms: The parked nozzle scrapes against printed parts, or knocks models off the bed.
• Cause: Incorrect mechanical Z-height calibration, or thermal expansion of the nozzle when heated.
• Solution: Calibrate the nozzle heights while both hotends are heated to print temperatures (e.g., 200°C). Keep the nozzles clean of plastic buildup.
