The Renkforce Basic 3 is an FDM 3D printer from Renkforce with a 120 x 120 x 180 mm build volume.

Specifications

The Renkforce Basic 3 is a compact, entry-level consumer FDM 3D printer distributed primarily by the European electronics retailer Conrad Electronic around 2020. Engineered for beginners, students, and STEM education classrooms, the printer focuses on a simplified user experience, safety, and a low entry price. However, its mechanical limitations require a solid understanding of basic printing principles to achieve reliable results.

  • Hotend: Features a compact hotend assembly with an all-metal construction capable of reaching temperatures up to 260°C. It utilizes a small brass heater block and heater cartridge.

Calibration

Because the bed is unheated, first-layer height calibration and surface preparation are critical. Any deviation will result in the model detaching from the build plate early in the print.

  • PEI/Magnetic Sheet Degreasing: Clean the magnetic build sheet with 99.9% Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) before starting a print.
  • Expected result: A grease-free, clean surface that provides maximum mechanical adhesion for PLA.

Common defects

The low price point of the Renkforce Basic 3 involves compromises in component life and mechanical design.

  • Hardware defects and mechanical weaknesses
  • Lack of Bed Heat leading to Warp: The unheated bed is the most common source of print failures. Parts larger than 5 cm tend to lift at the corners (warping) due to uneven cooling, causing the print to fail or become distorted.
  • Plastic Extruder Arm Failure: The stock extruder assembly is made of plastic.

What it is used for

Excellent Use-Cases:

  • STEM Classrooms for Young Students: The low power draw (60-90W), low voltage, and unheated bed make it a safe option for classrooms, eliminating the risk of accidental bed burns.
  • Small PLA Models and Toys: Ideal for printing small decorative models, keychains, and small brackets that fit within the 12 cm build limit.
