Sonic XL 4K

The Sonic XL 4K is an LCD 3D printer from Phrozen with a 190 x 120 x 200 mm build volume.

Specifications

Light Engine: 8.9-inch 4K monochrome LCD (3840×2400), 50 µm XY resolution. Mono screens offer ~4× longer lifespan than colour panels and transmit more UV light, enabling 1-second cure times per layer.

Optics/UV Array: Parallel 405 nm UV LED array. Parallel light architecture reduces blooming and preserves fine-feature accuracy.

Platform: Aluminium build plate with manual 4-bolt levelling and spring-loaded mechanism; single linear Z-rail.

Build Volume: 190 × 120 × 200 mm (≈4.56 L maximum): 35% larger than the Sonic Mini 4K.

Enclosure: Passive UV-blocking orange acrylic cover; no active climate control. FEP/nFEP vat is consumable, ~200–400 h lifespan.

Calibration

1. Paper Levelling: Place A4 sheet under build plate, release 4 bolts, Home command, tighten with slight resistance.

2. Exposure Matrix (RERF): Print RERF test file with incremental Btm Exp Time (e.g. 30–80 s in 10 s steps) and Normal Exp (1.5–4 s). Select column with full bridges and no blooming.

3. Lift Speed & Rest Time: Start at 60 mm/min lift; reduce to 40 on delamination. Rest time 1–2 s standard; up to 3 s for highly adhesive resins.

Common defects

Suction cup / FEP adhesion: Hollow volumes without drain holes create vacuum on lift; solution: add ≥1–2 mm drain holes in hidden areas + reduce lift speed.

Undercure (soft parts): Aged FEP (cloudy), expired resin, or wrong exposure settings. Diagnosis: thumb pressure on test cube: if it flexes, increase Normal Exp by 15%.

Warping at raft: Ambient temp below 18°C + long Btm Exp = lifted corners.

What it is used for

Tabletop Gaming & Miniatures: 50 µm at 1 s/layer = fast batch of 20–30 figures (28 mm scale) in 2–3 hours. 190×120 mm footprint fits a full army unit in one print.

Jewelry & Lost-Wax Casting: Castable resins burn out cleanly in investment; MSLA surface finish is smooth enough for direct jewelry casting.
