The Koonovo KN5 Idex is an FDM 3D printer from Koonovo with a 400 x 400 x 500 mm build volume.

Specifications

The Koonovo KN5 Idex is a large-format, semi-professional FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) 3D printer equipped with an Independent Dual Extruder (IDEX) motion system. Built as a larger successor to the KN3, the KN5 features a reinforced mechanical frame and expanded build volume, making it suitable for manufacturing batch parts, full-scale industrial prototypes, and custom tooling. The large-format IDEX system enables parallel processing of components in Duplication or Mirror modes, reducing production time.

  • Technology: FDM/FFF (Fused Filament Fabrication) compatible with 1.75 mm filament.
  • Build Volume: 400 × 400 × 500 mm.

Calibration

Calibrating a large-format IDEX system with Volcano hotends requires a systematic approach. Follow these 8 steps:

  • Mechanical Z-Alignment of the Secondary Volcano Nozzle:

Due to the extended melt zone of Volcano blocks, thermal expansion is more pronounced, requiring nozzle alignment to be performed at printing temperatures.

Procedure: Heat both nozzles to 240°C and the bed to 80°C. Wait 10 minutes. Level the bed relative to Tool 0 (left).

Common defects

  • Hardware defects and mechanical weaknesses
  • X-Gantry Flex in Center: The 400 mm span under the weight of two independent toolheads can cause the X-axis gantry to sag slightly in the center (by 0.1–0.2 mm). Symptoms: Over-extruded or scraped layers at the bed corners, and poor first-layer adhesion in the center. Solution: Use a dense 8x8 bed mesh to compensate, and keep the carriages as light as possible.

What it is used for

Suitable Materials and Applications:

  • Batch Production (Duplication Mode): Doubles production throughput on the 400x400 mm bed by printing two identical parts simultaneously.
  • Large Parts with Soluble Supports: Printing large, complex mechanical models with internal cavities using PLA and water-soluble PVA supports.
