The Geeetech I3ProB is an FDM 3D printer from Geeetech with a 20 x 20 x 20 mm build volume.

Specifications

The Geeetech Prusa i3 Pro B is a classic DIY (Do-It-Yourself) 3D printer kit based on the open-source RepRap Prusa i3 project. This model played a significant role in making desktop 3D printing accessible in the mid-2010s. Constructed from laser-cut acrylic sheets, the printer requires complete assembly from scratch (bolting components, routing cables, and configuring electronics). This makes it an educational tool for acquiring hardware experience, but it requires regular maintenance and troubleshooting.

  • Direct-Drive Extruder (MK8 Setup)

The printer features a classic direct-drive extruder design based on the MK8 setup, mounted directly on the X-carriage.

Calibration

Assembling and maintaining the Prusa i3 Pro B requires performing the following eight calibration steps:

  • Acrylic Frame Squaring

Acrylic panels are flexible and can twist if not aligned correctly. An out-of-square frame results in skewed, non-orthogonal prints (e.g., circles printing as ovals).

  • Expected result: The vertical frame is perpendicular to the base frame at exactly 90 degrees in all directions.

Common defects

The Prusa i3 Pro B requires regular troubleshooting of several design and material limitations:

  • Hardware defects and mechanical weaknesses
  • Acrylic Frame Cracking: Acrylic is brittle. Vibration and over-tightened fasteners can cause cracks to form around load-bearing joints (e.g., Z-axis motor mounts).
  • Solution: Use plastic or rubber washers under screw heads and tighten fasteners gently.

What it is used for

Best use-cases

  • Educational STEM Kits: An excellent platform for learning the mechanics and electronics of FDM printing through assembly and modification.
  • Flexible TPU Filaments: The direct-drive MK8 extruder handles soft TPU filaments well for seals, gaskets, and phone cases.
