The BQ Witbox is an FDM 3D printer from BQ with a 210 x 297 x 200 mm build volume.

Specifications

The BQ Witbox is one of the first fully enclosed desktop 3D printers designed for mass use, introduced by the Spanish brand BQ. Conceived as a safe machine for schools, offices, and design studios, it features an industrial steel chassis and a locking front door. The kinematic design places X/Y axis movement at the top of the machine while the bed moves down along the Z-axis, which is more stable than traditional Cartesian bed-slinger configurations.

  • Hotend: Proprietary Direct Drive extruder by BQ, ensuring a short and controlled filament path. The thermal block supports operating temperatures up to 240°C.

Calibration

Maintenance and calibration of the BQ Witbox require regular inspection of the X/Y cross-shaft geometry. Follow these 8 calibration steps:

  • 3-Point Manual Bed Leveling: The Witbox uses three adjustment screws under the bed, which simplifies the process compared to 4-point designs by preventing bed plate twisting.
  • Expected result: A uniform 0.1 mm gap across the entire A4 glass surface.
  • Tip: Use a metal feeler gauge or a thick business card.

Common defects

  • Hardware defects and mechanical weaknesses
  • PTFE Heat Break Liner Degradation: This is the primary cause of under-extrusion in the Witbox. When users attempt to print at temperatures above 235°C, the Teflon liner softens, shrinks, and blocks the filament path, causing extruder motor clicking. Solution: Replace the PTFE liner every 200–300 hours or upgrade to an all-metal hotend (e.g., E3D V6).

What it is used for

Best use-cases:

  • Classrooms and Schools: The enclosed frame and locking door provide a safe environment, preventing children from touching hot components or moving axes during operation.
  • Large PLA Architectural Models: The stable XY gantry and A4 footprint are well-suited for printing large-scale PLA models, buildings, and urban mockups.
