Specifications

Hello Krasi, and welcome to this technical breakdown of the BLV MGN Cube 300. Designed by Ben Levi, this open-source CoreXY 3D printer project has become a standard for rigidity, speed, and DIY customization. Combining a CoreXY motion layout, linear guide rails (MGN) on all axes, and a structural frame built from heavy-duty aluminum extrusions, the BLV MGN Cube is built for advanced users who require high FDM performance without hardware or software limitations. Let's look at its technical specifications:.

Calibration

Assembling and tuning the BLV MGN Cube 300 requires mechanical precision. Any misalignment in the linear rails or belts will degrade CoreXY performance. Follow these 8 calibration steps:

  • Frame Squaring Calibration:
  • Description: Before mounting the linear rails, the aluminum extrusion cube must be square. Use a machinist's square on all frame corners. Use calipers to verify that the distances between the profiles match on both ends within 0.1 mm.

Common defects

  • Hardware defects and mechanical weaknesses
  • Low-Quality Clone Linear Rail Binding: Many builders purchase budget clone linear rails. These can suffer from inconsistent ball bearing sizes or rough races, causing micro-stiction during carriage travel. This introduces fine wall patterns or layer shifts. Solution: Clean and re-lubricate the rails, replace the ball bearings with ceramic alternatives, or upgrade to name-brand rails (e.g., LDO or HIWIN).

What it is used for

Recommended:

  • High-Speed Printing: CoreXY kinematics make the printer suitable for fast, high-quality production.
  • Engineering Thermoplastics: The cubic frame can be enclosed with acrylic panels, creating a chamber suitable for printing ABS, ASA, and Polycarbonate without warping.
  • Functional Prototyping: Suitable for printing structural parts up to 300 x 300 mm in size.
