The Blocks Zero is an FDM 3D printer from Blocks with a 120 x 140 x 120 mm build volume.

Specifications

Hello Krasi, and welcome to this technical analysis of the Blocks Zero. Today, we are examining the most compact, lightweight, and affordable 3D printer released by Portuguese company Blocks Technology, originally launched via a crowdfunding campaign in 2017. Designed as an entry-level DIY (Do-It-Yourself) kit for beginners, students, and STEM classrooms, the Blocks Zero is a minimalist Cartesian printer focused on educational fundamentals. Let's break down its verified technical specifications:

  • Hotend: The hotend features a Bowden configuration with an internal PTFE liner.

Calibration

Configuring the Blocks Zero requires care due to its lightweight chassis and non-heated print surface. Follow these 8 calibration steps to achieve stable prints:

  • Frame Joint Inspection and Reinforcement:
  • Description: Since the printer is assembled by the user from laser-cut panels, check that all interlocking joints are tight. Apply wood glue (PVA) to the MDF tabs during assembly to eliminate structural play.

Common defects

  • Hardware defects and mechanical weaknesses
  • Acrylic Bed Warping: Acrylic has limited thermal and mechanical stability. Over time, due to cleaning and constant tension from the leveling screws, the acrylic plate will warp in the center, making level calibration difficult. Solution: Replace the acrylic sheet with a borosilicate glass plate or a thin aluminum sheet of the same size.

What it is used for

Recommended:

  • Education and Classroom Projects: Suitable for demonstrating the principles of FDM 3D printing and DIY machine assembly in STEM environments.
  • Small PLA Prints: Suitable for printing miniatures, toys, and small desktop organizers with low mechanical strength requirements.
