Specifications

Hello Krasi, and welcome to this technical analysis of the Blocks RD50 in Mirror Mode. This operating configuration represents the capabilities of the Independent Dual Extruder (IDEX) kinematics. In Mirror Mode, the secondary carriage (T1) replicates the movements of the primary carriage (T0) along the X-axis in reverse (mirrored) coordinates, while the Y-axis and Z-axis movements are shared. This allows the simultaneous production of left-hand and right-hand symmetrical parts (such as mirror housings, brackets, or orthopedic shoe molds) within a single print cycle. Let's break down the technical specifications and operational details of this mode:.

Calibration

Operating the Blocks RD50 in Mirror Mode requires precise physical synchronization between both toolheads. Any dimensional or Z-height deviation will result in asymmetrical defects. Follow these 8 calibration steps:

  • Mirror Center Offset Calibration:
  • Description: The firmware must determine the exact physical center of the X-axis to calculate coordinate inversion. Initiate the Mirror Center Offset calibration.

Common defects

  • Hardware defects and mechanical weaknesses
  • Asymmetrical Backlash Distortion: If one carriage has loose belt tension or worn linear bearings, it will introduce backlash. Because the toolheads move in opposite directions, this backlash will distort the parts in opposite directions. Symmetrical features (such as screw holes) will not align when assembling the two parts. Solution: Use thread locker (Loctite) on the pulley grub screws and check carriage play regularly.

What it is used for

Recommended:

  • Symmetrical Mechanical Components: Fabricating left- and right-hand oriented parts (such as automotive mirror brackets or door handles) simultaneously.
  • Orthopedic Molds: Printing symmetrical left and right orthoses or prostheses using ASA or Nylon.
  • Symmetrical Structural Enclosures: Producing matching left and right halves of split enclosures.
