3D Systems Figure 4 Standalone, Technical Overview

Technology

DLP (Digital Light Processing) stereolithography, the DLP projector flashes an entire layer at once onto a thin film of photopolymer resin, curing it in seconds. Faster than laser SLA for small-to-medium cross-sections and delivers six-sigma repeatability for production runs.

Build Volume

124 × 70 × 196 mm: a compact format suited for parts up to ~120 mm. Larger parts require splitting and bonding.

Resolution and Speed

75 µm XY pixel at 1920 × 1080 DLP projector; layers from 25 to 100 µm. Up to 100 mm/h print speed: comparable to production SLA systems, achieved through optimised peel mechanics and UV dosing.

Calibration

Figure 4 Standalone Calibration

  • Platform Levelling: Check Z-offset and platform tilt relative to the build window. Expected: uniform first-layer adhesion across the full 124 × 70 mm area. Tip: The narrow 70 mm axis is more sensitive to tilt: recheck after every vat swap.
  • UV Intensity Check: Measure with a UV meter or run 3D Sprint diagnostics. Expected: intensity within ±10% of baseline.

Common defects

Common Defects on the Figure 4 Standalone

Layer Delamination: DLP systems release the entire layer simultaneously, generating significant peel force for dense, wide cross-sections. Insufficient supports or critical geometries can cause layer separation. Fix: Orient at 15–30°; add supports under broad horizontal faces.

Pixel Stepping on Curved Surfaces: The fixed 75 µm DLP pixel leaves visible stair-stepping on radii and biomorphic shapes.

What it is used for

Figure 4 Standalone Use Cases

Strengths: Figure 4 Standalone excels at same-day functional prototyping: 100 mm/h means a finished part by end of working day. Low-volume production (1–100 parts) is another key strength: six-sigma repeatability and a broad material range (rigid, flexible, castable, biocompatible) enable final parts without tooling.
