Specifications

The Z-Bolt Classic is a notable open-source DIY 3D printer project developed by a dedicated community of makers and shared on platforms like GitHub and Russian 3D printing forums (such as 3DToday). It was designed as a high-performance alternative to mass-market plastic-framed printers, featuring a rigid enclosed cabinet constructed from sheet materials and high-speed kinematics. Because the Z-Bolt Classic is a custom-built machine, final specifications depend on the options chosen by the individual builder, but the baseline design follows specific engineering guidelines.

Calibration

Assembling and commissioning the Z-Bolt Classic requires careful mechanical alignment and software tuning to address the characteristics of H-Bot kinematics. Follow these eight calibration steps:

  • MGN9 Linear Rail Preparation: Clean the factory shipping oil from the linear rails using an degreasing agent or mineral spirits. Dry the rails and apply a thin coat of lithium- or PTFE-based grease to the bearing tracks.

Common defects

  • Hardware defects and mechanical weaknesses
  • Gantry Racking and Diagonal Skew: This is a primary mechanical issue with H-Bot belt routing. When moving along Y, the single belt pulls on one side of the X-axis carriage first, which attempts to rotate the gantry diagonally.
  • Symptoms: Circle shapes print as ovals; increased wear on Y-axis linear rails; carriage binding during rapid direction changes.
  • Causes: Uneven belt pull inherent in H-Bot kinematics.

What it is used for

  • High-Speed Technical Prototyping (ABS/ASA/PETG): The rigid steel/composite frame and enclosed space support high temperatures, making it suitable for printing functional parts in ABS or ASA.
  • Continuous Long-Duration Prints: The MGN9 linear rails offer a long service life and require less maintenance than V-slot rollers.
