The Wanhao Duplicator i3 (widely known as the Di3) is one of the most historically significant and influential budget open-frame FDM 3D printers, entering the market in 2015. Based on the classic Cartesian Prusa i3 layout, this printer became a global success by offering a rigid steel frame (at a time when most cheap competitors used acrylic or wood) and an exceptionally low price tag. The design separates the printer into two main assemblies: the gantry frame and an external Control Box, which houses the power supply, Melzi motherboard, LCD controller, and SD card reader.

Calibration

Achieving precise prints on the Duplicator i3 requires following a strict calibration protocol to align the gantry and optimize the extrusion path:

• Z-Axis Lead Screw Synchronization: Because the Z gantry is driven by two independent stepper motors on separate lead screws, they can easily get out of sync when the printer is powered down, twisting the X-axis gantry.

Common defects

• Hardware defects and mechanical weaknesses
• Melzi Mainboard Bed Connector Fire Hazard: The most infamous and dangerous defect on the Duplicator i3. The heated bed current (approx. 10-12A at 12V) is routed directly through the motherboard. The stock green screw terminals on the Melzi board are under-rated for this current, regularly melting and posing a direct fire risk. Solution: You MUST install an external MOSFET module.
