The Wand is an FDM 3D printer from Mixware with a 100 x 100 x 100 mm build volume.

Specifications

The Mixware Wand (frequently designated as the Mixware Wand Go) is a compact, fully enclosed FDM 3D printer engineered primarily for the educational sector, younger students, and beginners looking for an approachable entry point into additive manufacturing. Released through crowdfunding campaigns around 2021, the Wand stands out with its small footprint, clean aesthetic, and emphasis on user safety and ease of use. Unlike larger industrial platforms, the Wand Go is built for desktop convenience in classrooms and bedrooms, integrating a surprisingly sophisticated, downscaled CoreXY motion system inside a protective enclosure.

Calibration

Although designed as a plug-and-play machine, maintaining consistent output quality on the Mixware Wand requires basic, periodic calibration:

  • Z-Offset and First-Layer Alignment: Since the printer lacks manual leveling thumb screws under the bed, the Z-offset must be adjusted digitally via the control panel interface.
  • Expected result: A uniform, clean first layer on the magnetic build plate without gaps or nozzle dragging.

Common defects

  • Hardware defects and mechanical weaknesses
  • Plastic Extruder Gear Wear: To keep the toolhead as light as possible, some internal drive gears are made of plastic, which can wear down over time, causing extrusion slips. Solution: Replace the extruder mechanism with a metal gear upgrade or source original replacement parts from the manufacturer.

What it is used for

Best use-cases:

  • Classrooms and STEM Labs: The enclosed build chamber, low-temperature surfaces, and HEPA filter make it an exceptionally safe tool for teaching 3D printing concepts.
  • Small Figures and Toys: Perfect for printing small conceptual parts, miniature toys, and replacement plastic tabs using PLA.
