The Rigid3D Hobby is an FDM 3D printer from Rigid3D with a 200 x 200 x 200 mm build volume.

Specifications

The Rigid3D Hobby is an entry-level desktop FDM 3D printer developed by the Turkish manufacturer Rigid3D. It was designed specifically for hobbyists, STEM educational programs, and beginners looking to explore additive manufacturing. The Hobby model features a simplified mechanical frame to minimize cost while retaining the core electronics and software reliability characteristics of the Rigid3D brand.

  • Hotend: Equipped with a single Bowden-style extruder capable of reaching temperatures up to 245°C. The hotend features a PTFE-lined heatbreak where the Teflon tube sits flush against the back of the nozzle.

Calibration

Achieving consistent results on the Rigid3D Hobby requires a precise calibration routine:

  • Frame Squareness Alignment: Before printing, verify that all corners of the frame are at a precise 90-degree angle. Use a machinist's square. The acrylic joints can loosen slightly during transport or due to temperature fluctuations. Tighten the assembly screws carefully; do not overtighten, or the acrylic plates will crack.

Common defects

  • Hardware defects and mechanical weaknesses
  • Acrylic Frame Stress Cracking:
  • Symptoms: Hairline cracks forming around the mounting screws on the corner brackets and Y-axis motor mounts. Increased frame vibration and gantry flex.
  • Cause: Acrylic (plexiglass) is brittle and degrades under constant vibration and mechanical tension, especially when assembly bolts are overtightened.

What it is used for

Recommended Applications

  • STEM Classrooms and Learning: An excellent educational tool for schools and makerspaces. The open chassis allows students to see and understand the mechanics of every axis and motor.
  • PLA Printing (Models & Figures): The print cooling fan handles PLA effectively, providing smooth surface finishes and clean details at moderate print speeds.
