Specifications

Hello Krasi, and welcome to this deep architectural review of the legendary Blocks One! Today, we are dissecting the machine that served as the foundational workhorse for Portugal's Blocks Technology since its launch in 2015. This Cartesian-based FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) 3D printer was engineered to deliver simplicity, robustness, and reliability. Let's break down its verified engineering specifications:

  • Hotend: The Blocks One features a classic Bowden-fed hotend assembly equipped with a PTFE-lined heatbreak. This structural design restricts the safe operating temperature to a maximum of 260°C.

Calibration

Tuning the Blocks One to achieve professional-grade results requires meticulous mechanical calibration. Follow these 8 essential calibration procedures:

  • Frame Squareness Alignment (Squaring the Cartesian Axes):
  • Description: Due to the combination of steel and acrylic structural plates, the frame can easily warp during shipping or heavy operations. Use a machinist's square to check that the vertical Z-axis rods are exactly 90 degrees relative to the Y-axis base.

Common defects

  • Hardware defects and mechanical weaknesses
  • Pneumatic Bowden Coupler Failure: The stock press-fit pneumatic couplers (PC4-M6 or PC4-M10) holding the Teflon tube at the extruder and hotend degrade quickly. The internal metal teeth lose their grip, allowing the PTFE tube to slide back and forth during retractions. This ruins retraction consistency and leads to massive stringing and hotend clogs.

What it is used for

Recommended:

  • Educational Demonstrations: Excellent for classrooms and makerspaces to teach the fundamental mechanics of FDM 3D printing, Cartesian kinematics, and open-source Marlin firmware configuration.
  • PLA Prototyping: Performs reliably with standard PLA, producing conceptual models, figurines, and non-stressed components.
