Specifications

The RatRig V-Core 3 400mm is a large-format DIY CoreXY 3D printer kit launched in 2021. Featuring a 400 mm cubic build volume, this model is designed for industrial prototyping and low-volume production of substantial structural components. At this scale, gantry dynamics, structural rigidity, and heated bed thermal expansion present specific engineering challenges that require careful assembly and calibration.

  • Hotend: The printer utilizes the modular EVA 3 toolhead carriage. It does not ship with a pre-configured hotend, allowing the operator to select a high-performance, high-flow unit (such as the Phaetus Rapido, E3D Revo, or Mosquito).

Calibration

Tuning a large-format CoreXY printer requires a calibration process focused on resonance mapping, belt tensioning, and heated bed thermal compensation.

  • PEI Sheet Degreasing: Clean the PEI build plate with 99.9% Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) before every print.
  • Expected result: Complete removal of hand oils and dust, ensuring maximum first-layer adhesion during long print runs.

Common defects

Despite its robust design, the V-Core 3 400mm has specific hardware vulnerabilities and software configuration quirks.

  • Hardware defects and mechanical weaknesses
  • Belt Elasticity and Backlash: The 4.8-meter-long belts are subject to elastic elongation during high-acceleration directional changes. This can cause surface ghosting and dimensional inaccuracies. Regularly check belt tension.

What it is used for

Excellent Use-Cases:

  • Large-Scale Industrial Prototyping: Ideal for printing large structural enclosures, automotive components, and ducting assemblies in a single piece.
  • Batch Manufacturing: The 400 x 400 mm bed surface allows for large-batch production of small parts in a single print run.
