The Creality CR-10S4 is an FDM 3D printer from Creality with a 400 x 400 x 400 mm build volume.

Specifications

  • Hotend: The CR-10S4 is equipped with a Bowden extruder feeding into a standard MK8 hotend. The heatbreak contains an internal PTFE liner tube, which physically and software-limits the maximum print temperature to 250°C for user safety. The heater cartridge is rated at 40W, operating on a 12V DC electrical system. The hotend carriage travels along the X-axis rail on three POM V-wheels.
  • Bed: A massive heated aluminum bed plate measuring 400 x 400 mm, topped with a thick glass build plate. The heated bed is powered by a 12V heating element. Because of the large 0.16 m² surface area, heat dissipates rapidly, meaning the 12V power supply struggles to heat the bed.

Calibration

Managing a large-format Cartesian bed-slinger requires specific calibration tuning:

  • Dual Z-Axis Alignment (Tramming):
  • Action: Since both Z-axis motors are wired to a single stepper driver in parallel, they can easily get out of sync when the printer is powered down and the gantry is manually adjusted. Rotate the lead screws by hand to ensure the distance from the X-rail to the top frame is identical on both sides (use two identical 3D-printed blocks as alignment spacers).

Common defects

  • Hardware defects and mechanical weaknesses
  • Symptom: Melted GX16 Aviator connector on the control box.
  • Cause: The 12V bed heater pulls close to 15A. The stock 4-pin GX16 connector on the back of the control box has poor contact surface area, leading to electrical resistance, heating, and melting.
  • Solution: Bypass the connector and run high-current silicone wires (12AWG) directly, or replace the connector with high-current XT60 plugs.

What it is used for

Best use-cases

  • Large PLA Cosplay Props: Ideal for printing helmets, swords, and armor plates where volume is critical.
  • Large Sand Casting Molds: Excellent for printing large molds in PLA at slow speeds.

Anti-use-cases

  • Shrinkage-Prone Materials (ABS, ASA, PC, Nylon): Without a heated chamber and a high-power bed, large ABS prints will warp and split.
