Specifications

The BQ Prusa i3 Hephestos XL (developed by the Spanish technology brand BQ) represents a robust and structured take on the classic open-source RepRap Prusa i3 design, featuring a expanded horizontal build area. The model stands out by replacing standard plastic frame elements with powder-coated steel and aluminum plate components, significantly improving rigidity and mechanical reliability compared to standard DIY clones of its era.

Hotend and Extruder

The Hephestos XL is equipped with an all-metal direct-drive extrusion system designed in-house by BQ. This system utilizes a single drive gear and tensioner pulley optimized for 1.75 mm filament.

Calibration

To maintain dimensional accuracy and reliable operation on the BQ Prusa i3 Hephestos XL, follow this calibration sequence:

  • Verify Y-Axis Rod Parallelism and Alignment:

Due to the extended 300 mm travel range of the Y-carriage, the 8 mm smooth rods are vulnerable to minor misalignment. Use a high-precision spacer or caliper to measure the distance between the two rods at the front and back of the frame. The deviation must not exceed 0.2 mm.

Common defects

  • Hardware defects and mechanical weaknesses
  • Y-Axis Ghosting and Ringing: The 300 mm glass and metal platform has high inertial mass. Rapid direction changes along the Y-axis create significant forces that shake the frame, resulting in wave-like surface defects (ghosting) on printed walls. Solution: Reduce outer wall print speed to 30–35 mm/s and set Y-axis acceleration to 500–600 mm/s² in the slicer.

What it is used for

Recommended Applications

  • Large-Scale Concept Prototyping (PLA): The 300 mm wide build area makes the printer ideal for printing architectural mockups, electronics enclosures, and large cosmetic models that do not require high thermal resistance.
