The Hellbot Hidra is an FDM 3D printer from Hellbot with a 230 x 230 x 250 mm build volume.

Specifications

The Hellbot Hidra is a professional FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) 3D printer designed and manufactured by the Argentine company Hellbot. The defining hardware feature of the Hidra is its Independent Dual Extruder (IDEX) architecture. Unlike dual-extruder printers that share a single carriage, IDEX systems employ two separate tool heads that translate independently along the X-axis guide rail. This layout enables advanced operations such as simultaneous duplication and mirror printing, while eliminating the cross-nozzle scratching and material bleeding common in standard dual-extrusion systems.

Calibration

The IDEX kinematics of the Hellbot Hidra require a systematic calibration process to ensure alignment of both independent nozzles along the X, Y, and Z axes.

  • X-Axis Offset Calibration for Independent Carriages

Because both print heads translate along the same guide rail using separate motors, their relative physical distance must be defined in the firmware. Print a standard calibration pattern consisting of matching lines printed by T0 (left nozzle) and T1 (right nozzle).

Common defects

  • Hardware defects and mechanical weaknesses
  • Bowden Collet Wear: The pneumatic fittings that secure the PTFE tube to the extruder and hotend can wear out quickly. During retraction, the tube can slide back and forth in the fitting by 1–3 mm. This play ruins retraction settings, leading to severe stringing. Replacing the fittings or installing locking clips is recommended.

What it is used for

Best use-cases:

  • Batch Duplication Printing: Well-suited for printing batches of identical parts (such as brackets, housings, or promotional items). Duplication mode doubles production output by printing two identical parts simultaneously.
