The Printrbot Simple is an FDM 3D printer from Printrbot with a 100 x 100 x 115 mm build volume.

Specifications

The Printrbot Simple (Model 1405 Maker's Edition) is a historically significant FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) 3D printer that played a central role in the early days of affordable desktop 3D printing. Designed by Brook Drumm and funded via Kickstarter, this printer was conceived as an entry-level DIY kit. It is characterized by its minimalist, laser-cut birch plywood frame and a cantilevered Cartesian motion system.

  • Kinematics & Motion System: The printer utilizes a cantilevered Cartesian kinematics system. The heated print bed moves along the Y-axis on two parallel steel linear shafts.

Calibration

Achieving consistent print quality on the Printrbot Simple 1405 requires following this detailed calibration process:

  • Inductive Probe Calibration (Z-Probe Offset):

Adjust the inductive sensor height using its mounting nuts so that the bottom of the probe sits exactly 1.0 - 1.5 mm higher than the nozzle tip. Run the G29 auto-leveling macro and use the terminal interface to adjust the Z-offset value (`M212 Z[value]`). Save to EEPROM with `M500`.

Common defects

  • Hardware defects and mechanical weaknesses
  • Plywood Frame Warping: The birch plywood frame is sensitive to environmental humidity. High humidity can cause the wood panels to swell slightly, which can misalign the linear shafts and affect print accuracy.
  • Solution: Seal all plywood parts with a clear coat of wood sealant or paint to protect the wood from moisture. Keep the printer in a dry room.

What it is used for

Best use-cases

  • Vintage Hardware Collections: A classic machine for enthusiasts of open-source RepRap history.
  • Hands-on Robotics Demonstrations: The open frame is useful for demonstrating the mechanics of 3D printing in robotics classes.
  • Small PLA Parts: Printing small brackets, toy models, and replacement parts smaller than 8 cm.

Unsuitable use-cases (Anti-cases).
