Specifications

SLM 125 (Nikon SLM Solutions): Technical Specifications

Technology and Laser

The SLM 125 uses Selective Laser Melting (SLM/L-PBF) with a single 400 W fiber laser at 1 070 nm wavelength and 3D scan optics. Build rate is up to 33 cm³/h.

Optics and Scanner

Three-dimensional scan optics maintain a consistent focused spot across the full Z-range of the build volume. Laser spot diameter is typically ≤ 100 µm at 400 W.

Build Volume and Layer Thickness

125 × 125 × 125 mm; layer thickness 20–75 µm. Reduced cylinder inserts allow up to 80% powder savings on small jobs: a significant advantage with expensive superalloy powders.

Chamber and Atmosphere.

Calibration

SLM 125 Calibration

  • Inert gas purge: Purge with argon or nitrogen to <0.1% O₂ for steels and <0.02% for titanium. Never shorten the procedure for titanium jobs.
  • Laser focus and position: Measure the spot and position of the 400 W laser against platform corners. Target: spot ≤ 100 µm; positional accuracy ≤ 0.1 mm. Calibrate Z-focus using the 3D scan optics.
  • Recoater leveling: Verify parallelism across the 125 mm span; acceptable deviation <20 µm.

Common defects

Common Defects on SLM 125

Porosity: Spherical (trapped gas) or irregular (lack of fusion). Fix: degas powder at 80 °C; optimize the melt window via power/speed matrix.

Oxidation: Discoloration or reduced ductility in titanium/aluminum parts. Cause: insufficient O₂ control. Fix: inspect chamber seals and gas line fittings.

Warping: Distortion in parts with wide cross-sections. Cause: thermal gradient. Fix: pre-heat platform to 100–200 °C; increase support density.

What it is used for

Applications and Limitations of SLM 125

Best applications:

  • New powder research: reduced inserts and small volume allow up to 80% powder savings on validation jobs, essential for expensive superalloys.
  • Medical and dental parts: the 125 mm cube is ideal for implants and prostheses in CoCrMo or Ti6Al4V.
