The Cocoon Create ModelMaker is an FDM 3D printer from Cocoon Create with a 120 x 135 x 100 mm build volume.

Specifications

The Cocoon Create ModelMaker is an ultra-compact desktop Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) 3D printer designed primarily for children, educational environments, and beginners. Sold by the ALDI supermarket chain in Australia, this machine is a rebranded version of the Wanhao Duplicator i3 Mini (specifically the i3 Mini v2). Developed to offer a "plug-and-play" experience with a small footprint, the ModelMaker is a budget-friendly machine with specific hardware constraints designed to keep the cost and power requirements low.

  • Hotend: Single Bowden extruder paired with an MK10 hotend.

Calibration

Calibrating a cantilever 3D printer with a non-heated bed requires specific adjustments. Follow these 8 calibration steps:

  • Cantilever X-Axis Sag Adjustment

Due to the single-sided support, the X-axis gantry can sag at the free end. Before tramming the bed, verify that the X-axis is parallel to the top frame crossbar. Adjust the eccentric nuts on the Z-axis roller carriage to tighten the fit around the vertical profile.

Common defects

  • Hardware defects and mechanical weaknesses
  • Cantilever Gantry Sag: Over time, the POM wheels on the Z-axis carriage wear down, causing the free end of the X-axis to droop. This results in uneven layer heights across the bed and horizontal banding on tall prints.
  • Solution: Inspect and adjust the Z-axis eccentric nuts regularly. Replace worn POM wheels.

What it is used for

Best Use-Cases

  • Classroom Projects (STEM): The low power consumption and cold bed make it a safer machine for young students.
  • Small Figurines and Miniatures: Suitable for printing tabletop gaming pieces, small decorative items, and toys.
  • Small Mechanism Prototyping: Printing small gears, linkages, and test fits for assembly verification.
