The Cartesio is an FDM 3D printer from MaukCC with a 300 x 200 x 100 mm build volume.

Specifications

The MaukCC Cartesio (designed by Dutch engineer Jos Scheepers) is a professional-grade, open-source hybrid desktop machine that functions as both a 3D printer (FDM/FFF) and a light-duty CNC mill/router. This dual-purpose design dictates a heavy, rigid frame structure that differs from typical lightweight consumer 3D printers. The Cartesio is built to withstand the physical stresses and lateral forces encountered during subtractive cutting, which translates into stability when operating as a 3D printer.

  • Hotend: Modular toolhead assembly capable of holding single, dual, or up to quad extruders (depending on the carriage model: Cartesio W or LD).

Calibration

Configuring and calibrating the hybrid MaukCC Cartesio requires attention to mechanical alignment and electrical tuning. Follow these 8 essential calibration steps:

  • Mechanical Frame Alignment and Squaring

Given the heavy aluminum construction, verify the geometry of the frame using a 90-degree machinist's square. Any misalignment in the vertical pillars will cause the Z-axis lead screws to bind. Tighten the frame assembly bolts only after confirming that the frame's diagonals are equal.

Common defects

  • Hardware defects and mechanical weaknesses
  • X/Y Lead Screw Nut Backlash: Over time, the brass lead screw nuts on the X and Y axes wear down from friction, especially if the machine is run without lubrication or in dusty CNC environments. Symptoms include oval holes on circular paths and play when reversing direction.
  • Solution: Replace the stock brass nuts with spring-loaded anti-backlash nuts, or upgrade the X and Y axes to ball screws.

What it is used for

Best Use-Cases

  • Technical Polymers Printing: The rigid frame and heated bed (110 °C) make it suitable for printing ABS, ASA, and Nylon (PA) when enclosed.
  • Hybrid Manufacturing (3D Print + CNC Finish): Printing a plastic part and then using the CNC toolhead to mill channels or threads without removing the workpiece.
