The M2 is a DLP 3D printer from Carbon with a 189 x 118 x 326 mm build volume.

Specifications

The Carbon M2 is a high-end industrial 3D printer that differs fundamentally from consumer-grade Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) or standard Stereolithography (SLA/LCD) machines. Developed by the Silicon Valley-based company Carbon (formerly Carbon 3D), the M2 utilizes the patented Digital Light Synthesis (DLS) technology, which builds upon the Continuous Liquid Interface Production (CLIP) chemical process. Instead of printing parts layer-by-layer with continuous peeling steps (where the build plate raises and lowers to detach the cured layer from the vat film, common in SLA/DLP), the Carbon M2 performs a continuous print pull.

Calibration

Maintenance and pre-print calibration for the Carbon M2 focus on optics, chemical composition, and fluid dynamics. Below are the 8 critical calibration and maintenance steps for operating the system:

  • Cassette Window Tension and Optical Inspection

The cassette window is the core of the CLIP process. The oxygen-permeable film at the bottom must be clean and tensioned. Prior to every print, inspect the window for haze, micro-scratches, or cured resin debris.

Common defects

  • Hardware defects and mechanical weaknesses
  • Cassette Window Clouding (Window Haze): The oxygen-permeable fluoropolymer film on the window cassette degrades under chemical and optical exposure. After 50-100 hours of print time, the film loses its oxygen permeability in areas of high usage, causing the resin to cure directly against the window. Symptoms include prints tearing off the build plate or sticking to the bottom of the vat.

What it is used for

Best Use-Cases

  • Serial Production of End-Use Parts: DLS dual-cure resins produce parts with isotropic mechanical properties, making the M2 suitable for functional components in automotive, aerospace, and consumer electronics.
  • Elastomeric Lattices: Printing shock-absorbing lattices for helmets, bike saddles, and athletic footwear outsoles.
