Specifications

The BQ Prusa i3 Hephestos is an iconic DIY 3D printer kit developed by the Spanish company BQ, based on the second generation of the classic open-source RepRap Prusa i3 design by Josef Prusa. This model played an important role in democratizing desktop 3D printing in Europe during 2014–2015 by offering a reliable component kit, improved cable management, and highly structured assembly instructions.

  • Hotend: Utilizes BQ's original Direct Drive extruder equipped with a 0.4 mm brass nozzle and an internal PTFE liner inside the heat break. It supports operating temperatures up to 220°C–230°C.

Calibration

To extract decent print quality from the BQ Prusa i3 Hephestos, follow these 8 calibration steps:

  • Manual Bed Leveling (The Paper Test): Because the bed lacks automatic sensors, you must manually adjust the four thumb screws underneath the bed corners.
  • Expected result: A uniform 0.1 mm gap between the nozzle tip and the glass bed across all printable areas.
  • Tip: Use a standard piece of printer paper (80g/m²).

Common defects

  • Hardware defects and mechanical weaknesses
  • Acrylic Frame Cracking: Acrylic is brittle. Over-tightening assembly bolts near the Z-motor mounts or frame corners causes micro-fractures that grow under motor vibrations, eventually breaking the frame plates. Solution: Do not over-tighten bolts; use rubber washers to distribute clamping forces.
  • PLA Printed Part Deformation: The carriage mounts and belt brackets are printed from PLA.

What it is used for

Best use-cases:

  • Educational DIY Projects: Excellent build project for robotics clubs and hobbyists looking to understand the mechanics and physics of Cartesian 3D printers.
  • Small PLA Prints: Well-suited for printing figurines, desktop organizers, and PLA decorative items at moderate speeds.
