The Atom 3 is an FDM 3D printer from Layer One with a 270 x 270 x 340 mm build volume.

Specifications

Delta-style 3D printers have always held a distinct appeal for the engineering community due to their high speed, clean design aesthetics, and stationary build plates. The Taiwanese manufacturer Layer One solidified its presence in the market with the release of the Atom 3. This printer was developed as a next-generation, industrial-grade desktop delta system, building on the successful architecture of its predecessor, the Atom 2. The core goals in designing the Atom 3 were to enhance overall structural stiffness, ease maintenance through modular sub-assemblies, and provide a reliable platform for processing engineering polymers at high printing speeds.

Calibration

Achieving accurate dimensions and geometric fidelity on the Atom 3 requires systematic calibration. The non-linear nature of delta kinematics means that any physical misalignment will translate to complex distortion in three dimensions. Follow these 8 calibration steps:

  • Tower Perpendicularity (Squaring) Alignment

The three vertical columns must stand at exactly 90 degrees relative to the flat print bed.

Common defects

  • Hardware defects and mechanical weaknesses
  • Modular Effector Gold Contact (Pogo-Pin) Wear: Since the Atom 3 is designed as a multi-functional system, the quick-change head relies on spring-loaded pins for electrical connections. Frequently swapping modules wears out these contacts, causing intermittent thermistor errors or heater faults.
  • Solution: Periodically clean the gold contacts with contact cleaner. Replace the interface board if the pins lose their spring tension.

What it is used for

Best applications:

  • Detailed Architectural Prototypes and Facades: Delta kinematics are perfect for scale models where high dimensional accuracy is critical for interlocking assemblies.
  • Smooth Vase-Mode Prints: Helical vase-mode prints turn out exceptionally smooth without seams due to the fluid motion of the three towers.
