The Zav Mini is an FDM 3D printer from Zav with a 160 x 160 x 160 mm build volume.

Specifications

The Zav Mini is the compact and highly optimized version in the DIY 3D printer family from the Zav series. It was created with the fundamental goal of offering the benefits of high-speed industrial motion control concepts (elevated speed and mechanical stability) in an ultra-small, desktop-friendly form factor. It is exceptionally popular among hobbyists and makers who have limited workspace but refuse to compromise on print quality and dimensional repeatability.

  • Frame Construction and Enclosure: Similar to the larger Max model, the load-bearing structure of the Zav Mini is constructed from high-precision laser-cut Baltic birch plywood with a thickness of 6 mm.

Calibration

Tuning the Zav Mini is slightly easier than the Zav Max due to the shorter axes and lighter gantry, but it still demands technical precision. Follow these 8 key calibration steps:

  • Y-Axis Rail Parallelism Calibration:

Ensure that the two parallel linear rails of the Y-axis are perfectly aligned. Loosen the mounting screws of the right Y-axis rail. Move the X-axis gantry to the frontmost position and tighten the first screw.

Common defects

  • Hardware defects and mechanical weaknesses
  • Symptom: Frame instability and rocking on flat surfaces.
  • Cause: The bottom compartment housing the electronics can bow or twist if the plywood pieces are assembled incorrectly or if the wood warps due to moisture.
  • Solution: Assemble the frame on a flat granite reference surface and install adjustable rubber feet.
  • Symptom: Belt slipping or jumping teeth under rapid accelerations.

What it is used for

  • High-precision small mechanical components: Gears, brackets, hinges, and small enclosures printed in PLA or PETG. The small H-Bot kinematics offer exceptional accuracy.
  • Miniatures and scale models: RC model parts, architectural prototypes, and educational kits.
  • Desktop or office use: Ideal for environments with tight space constraints.
