The Zav Big is an FDM 3D printer from Zav with a 300 x 200 x 200 mm build volume.

Specifications

The Zav Big is the large-format version of the popular open-source DIY ZAV 3D printer platform. This model was created for makers and professionals who want to leverage the kinematic stability of the ZAV design but require a larger build envelope for industrial prototyping and manufacturing of larger functional components. As a scaled-up machine, the ZAV Big introduces specific engineering challenges related to increased moving masses, belt elasticity over long spans, and thermal management of a larger heated build plate.

  • Kinematics: The printer is based on a CoreXY kinematic motion system.

Calibration

Scaling up the physical dimensions of a CoreXY printer requires a more thorough calibration. Below are the 8 essential steps for the ZAV Big:

  • Synchronization and alignment of the dual Z-axis

If the Z-axis is driven by two independent motors, the bed can tilt left or right under its own weight when the stepper motors are disabled. To calibrate this, configure the `Z_TILT_ADJUST` routine in Klipper or `G34` in Marlin.

Common defects

  • Hardware defects and mechanical weaknesses
  • Z-axis desynchronization on power-down: If the Z-axis uses two independent motors without a mechanical linkage, one side of the bed can drop faster than the other when power is cut. This results in a skewed bed at the next startup. Solution: Configure Klipper's Z-tilt adjustment or link both lead screws mechanically using a single closed timing belt and one Z-motor.

What it is used for

Best use-cases

  • Large-scale technical parts in ABS/ASA: Thanks to its rigid CoreXY kinematics and easily enclosed box structure, the ZAV Big is ideal for printing large enclosures, automotive parts, and industrial brackets that require high structural integrity.
