The Robo 3D R1 is an FDM 3D printer from Robo 3D with a 254 x 228 x 203 mm build volume.

Specifications

The Robo 3D R1 (along with its subsequent revision, the R1+ Plus) is an iconic consumer desktop FDM 3D printer produced by the American company Robo 3D. Released in the mid-2010s, it features a distinct design: a curved white ABS plastic casing that covers the internal electronics and gantry components, leaving only the build area open. This printer gained popularity among designers, educators, and makers due to its large build volume and integrated contact-based auto-bed leveling system.

  • Hotend: Standard configurations of later R1 units and the R1+ feature the Hexagon all-metal hotend. This hotend can reach operating temperatures up to 290°C.

Calibration

The unique layout of the Robo 3D R1 requires specific maintenance and calibration procedures:

  • Z-Carriage Homing Microswitch Alignment: Since the auto-leveling system relies on the physical lifting of the X-axis gantry, verify that the two microswitches in the Z-axis carriages release simultaneously when the gantry is lifted slightly by hand. Keep the switch housings clean of dust and filament debris.
  • Expected result: Consistent Z-homing and prevention of bed crash damage.

Common defects

  • Hardware defects and mechanical weaknesses
  • ABS Exterior Casing Cracking:
  • Symptoms: Cracks appearing around the mounting screws of the outer casing panels, gantry flex, and squeaking during prints.
  • Cause: The ABS plastic used for the casing is relatively thin and degrades over time due to thermal radiation from the heated bed and mechanical vibration.

What it is used for

Recommended Applications

  • PLA and PETG Prototyping: The Hexagon all-metal hotend and large build volume make this printer excellent for printing housings, enclosures, and display models.
  • Educational Makerspaces: The enclosed electronics compartment and smooth plastic casing provide a safer environment for classroom demonstrations.

Avoid Printing (Anti-cases).
