The Rigid3D Mucit is an FDM 3D printer from Rigid3D with a 150 x 150 x 150 mm build volume.

Specifications

The Rigid3D Mucit (translated as "Inventor" in Turkish) is a desktop FDM 3D printer that has played a significant role in educational institutions, makerspaces, and hobbyist labs across Turkey and the Balkan region. Released as a DIY kit, it requires users to assemble and calibrate the hardware from scratch, making it an excellent platform for learning the fundamental mechanics of 3D printing.

  • Hotend: The printer utilizes a single-extruder setup equipped with a standard J-head style hotend featuring a PTFE liner inside the heat break. It comes with a 0.4 mm brass nozzle designed for 1.75 mm filament. The maximum printing temperature is capped at 260 °C.

Calibration

Getting consistent prints from the Rigid3D Mucit requires careful mechanical calibration and fine-tuning. Follow these eight steps to calibrate your machine:

  • Frame Alignment and Gantry Squaring:

Inspect the steel frame using a machinist's square. Ensure that the vertical Z-axis rods are perpendicular to the Y-axis linear rails. Measure the distance between the two Z-axis lead screws at both the bottom and the top using a digital caliper.

Common defects

  • Hardware defects and mechanical weaknesses
  • Z-Wobble and Layer Banding:
  • Symptoms: Periodic horizontal lines appear on the outer walls of printed parts, matching the thread pitch of the Z-axis lead screws.
  • Cause: Bent threaded rods, misaligned Z-motor shafts, or rigid brass coupler nuts that transfer the lateral runout of the lead screws directly to the X-gantry.
  • Solution: Install flexible aluminum couplers (plum couplers) to isolate the Z-motors.

What it is used for

Best use-cases

What it prints well:

  • PLA Prototypes and Visual Models: Excellent for small figurines, mechanical models, and brackets printed in PLA.
  • Low-Stress Hobby Projects: Ideal for basic organizer trays, cable management clips, and small enclosure panels.
