The Proton X Rod is an FDM 3D printer from Proton with a 304 x 304 x 300 mm build volume.

The Proton X Rod is an FDM 3D printer from Proton with a 304 x 304 x 300 mm build volume.

Specifications

The Proton X Rod is an industrial-grade FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) 3D printer designed and manufactured by the Slovakian company INAT s.r.o. This printer was engineered to prioritize modularity, mechanical durability, and compatibility with high-performance engineering thermoplastics. Positioned firmly within the professional and industrial segments, the Proton X Rod is built for high-duty cycle production and functional prototyping.

Build Volume: The machine provides a build envelope of 304 mm × 304 mm × 300 mm (often categorized as 300 mm × 300 mm × 300 mm).

Calibration

The industrial design of the INAT Proton X Rod requires the following precise calibration steps:

  • Ball Screw Lubrication and Alignment

The X and Y axes ball screws require regular maintenance to prevent friction buildup and ensure smooth motion.

  • Step: Clean the threads of the ball screws using a lint-free cloth soaked in Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) to remove old grease and debris.

Common defects

  • Hardware defects and mechanical weaknesses
  • Modular Multi-Pin Connector Wear:
  • Symptoms: Intermittent heater faults, sudden thermal runaway errors, or temporary LCD screen resets during printing.
  • Cause: The modular connector pins are subjected to high vibration and heat during printing. Over time, the contacts can loosen or oxidize.
  • Solution: Clean pins with contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease. Replace the connector if pins are damaged.

What it is used for

Best use-cases:

  • Carbon-Fiber Composite Printing: The high torque of the ball screw drive, solid frame, and 470°C hotend make the Proton X Rod excellent for printing PEEK-CF, Nylon-CF, and PC-CF parts.
  • Industrial Jigs and Fixtures: The positioning accuracy of the ball screws ensures dimensional precision for manufacturing templates and fixtures.
