SLM Solutions SLM 125: Technical Overview
Technology and Laser System
The SLM 125 uses selective laser melting (SLM) with a single 400 W fiber laser (~1070 nm). At its market launch (around 2014), 400 W was the highest laser power available in the small-machine segment: an advantage for harder-to-melt materials.
Build Volume and Reduction
Nominal build volume 125 × 125 × 125 mm, reducible to 50 × 50 × 50 mm via an integrated tray confinement mechanism. The reduction cuts powder consumption by up to 80%: critical for exotic or high-cost alloys.
Substrate Plate Preheating.
Calibrating the SLM 125
1. Substrate Plate Leveling and Preheating
Level the substrate plate to below 50 µm deviation. Set the target preheat temperature (up to 200 °C) and wait for uniform distribution within ±10 °C. For nickel superalloys, allow at least 30 minutes of preheating.
2. Build Volume Reduction (when needed)
When working with small parts or expensive powders, activate the integrated confinement for 50×50×50 mm volume.
Typical Defects with the SLM 125
Hot Cracking in Nickel Superalloys
The most characteristic defect for this machine due to its frequent use with crack-susceptible alloys. Cause: thermal stresses during rapid cooling induce liquation or solidification cracking. Solution: maximum preheating (200 °C), optimized scan strategy with low thermal gradients, and mandatory post-process HIP.
Gas Porosity
Dissolve gas in powder (especially gas-atomized powders) causes spherical gas porosity.
Applications of the SLM 125
Research and Development
The SLM 125 is a typical choice for universities, research institutes, and R&D labs investigating new alloys or optimizing process parameters. The reducible build volume and preheating capability make the machine uniquely flexible for these applications: powder costs are minimized.
