LASERTEC 12 SLM

The LASERTEC 12 SLM is a DMLS 3D printer from DMG Mori with a 125 x 125 x 200 mm build volume.

Specifications

Laser System: Single fiber laser; 200 W standard, 600 W option for reflective alloys (Al, Cu). Optics / Scanner: Precision F-theta optics with 35 µm focal diameter: among the finest in production-class LPBF; galvanometric scanners with DMG Mori CNC-grade motion control heritage. Build Volume: 125 × 125 × 200 mm; optimised for dental, jewellery, and precision engineering. Platform / Recoater: Substrate plate with dial-indicator levelling; standard blade recoater. Chamber / Shielding Gas: Active sealed chamber with Ar/N₂ protection; real-time O₂ monitoring. Materials: Al, CoCr, Cu, Ni alloys, steel (316L, H13, 17-4PH), Ti: all standard LPBF alloys.

Calibration

Laser spot (35 µm): Beam profiler or burn media; protective window cleaning before every campaign is critical at 35 µm. Substrate levelling: Dial indicator, < 0.02 mm across 125×125 mm. Gas purge: < 50 ppm O₂ (steel/CoCr), < 20 ppm (Ti/Al); for 600 W Al builds: gas flow optimisation for spatter capture. VED matrix for new material: Coupon density > 99.5%; micro-CT for LOF vs keyhole classification.

Common defects

LOF / Keyhole porosity: At 35 µm spot the VED window is narrow: systematic Power/Speed matrix; micro-CT classification. Surface oxidation (Ti/Al): O₂ > 20 ppm → verify gas purity, leak check. Recoater collision: Distorted parts → increase support density, add preheating. Dimensional drift: Galvanometric or thermal drift → reference part calibration, beam offset correction in slicer.

Dental/medical: Crown-and-bridge, abutments, implants with 35 µm precision without additional machining. Aerospace tooling: Fuel nozzles and brackets with hybrid CNC+additive workflow. Jewellery: Precious metal alloys with fine spot for intricate details. CNC shop R&D: Entry LPBF with direct DMG Mori ecosystem integration.
