The Leapfrog Creatr HS XL is an FDM 3D printer from Leapfrog B.V. with a 270 x 270 x 590 mm build volume.

Specifications

The Leapfrog Creatr HS XL is a vertically extended version of the professional desktop FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) Creatr HS 3D printer, developed by Dutch manufacturer Leapfrog 3D Printers around 2014–2015. The "HS XL" designation denotes the combination of high speed (High Speed) and a massive Z-axis build envelope. This printer was engineered specifically for industries and research projects requiring tall, continuous single-piece prototypes (such as prosthetic limbs, architectural columns, piping ducts, and tall enclosures) without the structural weaknesses introduced by splitting and gluing parts.

  • Kinematics: Cartesian motion platform.

Calibration

The extended Z-axis of the Creatr HS XL introduces challenges related to axis parallelism and vibration resonance (Z-wobble). Follow these eight calibration steps:

  • Z-Axis Guide Shaft Parallelism Calibration:

Use a digital caliper to measure the distance between the two Z-axis linear shafts at both the top and the bottom of the frame. The difference must be under 0.2 mm.

  • Expected result: Smooth Z-axis travel over the entire 590 mm range without carriage binding.

Common defects

  • Hardware defects and mechanical weaknesses
  • Z-Wobble at High Z Coordinates: Due to the 590 mm height, any minor bend in the lead screws translates into visible X/Y layer shifts on the print walls.
  • Symptoms: Periodic banding patterns on printed walls, worsening in the upper half of the build volume.
  • Solution: Install flexible couplers (oldham couplers) on the Z-axis lead screws, or replace the lead screws with high-precision linear guides.

What it is used for

Suitable applications

  • Printing Tall Continuous Prototypes: Ideal for prosthetics, architectural columns, ducts, and tall housings without the need for assembly seams.
  • Tall Geometries with Soluble Supports: Using PVA allows for printing tall, complex overhangs and internal channels.
