Specifications

The IMADE3D JellyBOX Original is the first model in the educational 3D printer series from IMADE3D, launched with the novel concept of a screwless assembly. Instead of using standard bolts and nuts, the entire chassis is secured using plastic zip ties. This model established the groundwork for hands-on STEM education in 3D printing, turning the hardware assembly process into a Lego-like educational challenge.

  • Build volume: Highly compact printing area of 150 × 150 × 150 mm. This workspace is optimized for small classroom projects, fast test prints, and software demonstrations within a single school hour.
  • Kinematics: Classical Cartesian kinematic layout.

Calibration

The JellyBOX Original requires periodic checks on its plastic joints and older electronics. Follow these 8 steps for calibration:

  • Glass Bed Cleaning and Blue Tape Application: Clean the glass plate with 99% IPA. Since the bed lacks high-temperature heating, apply strips of blue painter's tape (3M Scotch Blue) side-by-side without overlapping to ensure adhesion.
  • Expected result: Mechanical adhesion for PLA prints on a cold bed surface.

Common defects

  • Hardware defects and mechanical weaknesses
  • Symptom: Slop in linear bearing housings and mechanical frame flexing.
  • Cause: Mechanical wear on the acrylic panels where the linear bearings mount due to structural vibrations.
  • Solution: Place small rubber strips or electrical tape inside the bearing mount cutouts, then secure with new zip ties.
  • Symptom: Zip ties holding the hotend assembly degrade and snap.

What it is used for

Best use-cases:

  • STEM Projects and Assembly Workshops: A great tool for teaching teenagers the basics of FDM hardware assembly and mechanical design.
  • Small PLA Parts: Fabricating small figures, toys, custom gears, and brackets.
  • Learning Printer Customization: An inexpensive open platform for learning Marlin configuration and electronic repairs.
