The Gutenberg Base is an FDM 3D printer from Gutenberg with a 250 x 200 x 200 mm build volume.

Specifications

The Gutenberg Base (often identified as the base-model Gutenberg G-ZERO) is a high-speed, industrial-grade desktop FFF (Fused Filament Fabrication) 3D printer. Engineered by the Japanese additive manufacturing technology firm Gutenberg Co., Ltd., this machine is optimized for fast prototyping, small-batch manufacturing, and high-precision production of functional components. It is designed to bridge the gap between low-cost desktop units and large industrial manufacturing systems.

  • Hotend and Extruder: The printer features a custom, lightweight high-flow hotend assembly paired with a direct-drive extrusion mechanism.

Calibration

The high speeds and acceleration rates of the Gutenberg Base require careful calibration to maintain print quality and prevent mechanical wear on drive components.

  • Resonance Compensation (Input Shaping Calibration)

To mitigate the inertial forces generated at acceleration rates of 20,000 mm/s², resonance compensation is necessary. Mount a three-axis accelerometer (such as the ADXL345) to the tool head. Run the input shaper frequency sweep test along the X and Y axes.

Common defects

  • Hardware defects and mechanical weaknesses
  • CoreXY Belt Wear at High Accelerations: Operating at 20,000 mm/s² puts significant stress on the drive belts. Over time, the belts stretch and shed black dust, leading to backlash and lost steps. Replacing the belts with high-quality Gates Kevlar belts is recommended every 500–600 printing hours.
  • Stepper Motor Overheating: The X and Y stepper motors can reach temperatures above 80 °C during extended high-speed print jobs.

What it is used for

Best use-cases:

  • Rapid Functional Prototyping: Ideal for engineering departments where design iterations need to be completed within a single workday.
  • Composite Part Manufacturing (PA-CF, PET-CF): The rigid frame, high-temperature hotend, and heated bed make it well-suited for printing high-strength, carbon-fiber-reinforced parts to replace metal brackets.
