The Creality Ender-3 / Ender-3 v2 is an FDM 3D printer from Creality with a 220 x 220 x 250 mm build volume.

The Creality Ender-3 / Ender-3 v2 is an FDM 3D printer from Creality with a 220 x 220 x 250 mm build volume.

Specifications

  • Hotend: Both printers utilize a classic Bowden extruder feeding a standard MK8 hotend. The heatbreak features an internal PTFE liner tube that runs directly through the hotend to touch the nozzle tip. The maximum print temperature is limited to 250°C for user safety. The feeding mechanism uses a single-drive extruder with a plastic arm.
  • Bed:
  • Ender-3 (Original): A flexible, textured magnetic build sticker (Buildtak-like) held to the aluminum bed plate with binder clips or adhesive. Heats up to 100°C quickly on a 24V line.

Calibration

To achieve maximum accuracy and surface quality on both platforms, follow these 8 calibration steps:

  • X-Gantry Squaring (Compensating Single Z-Lead Screw Sag):
  • Action: Because the printer relies on a single Z-axis screw on the left, the right side of the gantry can sag. Measure the distance from the X-rail to the top frame on both sides. Tighten the eccentric nuts on the right-side Z-carriage POM wheels until the play is eliminated, but avoid binding.

Common defects

  • Hardware defects and mechanical weaknesses
  • Symptom: Under-extrusion and extruder clicking.
  • Cause: The plastic extruder arm cracks under spring tension near the idler bearing.
  • Solution: Upgrade to an aluminum single-gear or dual-gear extruder.
  • Symptom: Burned screw terminals on the mainboard.
  • Cause: Pre-tinned wires in the screw terminals loosen over time under high current draw (15A for the bed), causing high resistance and melting.

What it is used for

Best use-cases

  • PLA Hobby Prints: Ideal for printing figures, models, and enclosures.
  • DIY Upgrades: A great machine for learning 3D printing mechanics by installing custom upgrades (Direct Drive, Klipper, etc.).

Anti-use-cases

  • Large ABS/ASA Parts: Open frame and lack of enclosure lead to severe warping and splitting.
