Technology and Beam

The Spectra M uses electron beam powder bed fusion (EB-PBF) with a 4.5 kW electron beam: the mid-tier power in Colibrium Additive's new Spectra line. The beam operates in full vacuum (≤1×10⁻⁴ Torr), eliminating the need for helium shielding gas required by LPBF systems.

Build Volume

Ø270×430 mm (cylindrical): positioned between the Spectra H and Spectra L in the portfolio.

Layer Thickness

Standard 50–75 µm; variable up to 150 µm for higher throughput on bulky parts.

Calibration

Calibration of the Spectra M

Electron Beam Calibration

Before each campaign, automated correction of focus, astigmatism, and positional distortion is performed via built-in calibration artifacts. Beam landing must be within ±0.1 mm of the target.

Build Plate Leveling

Mechanical verification of build plate parallelism relative to the powder recoater: deviation <0.2 mm across the full Ø270 mm surface.

Vacuum and Chamber Purity.

Typical Defects on the Spectra M

Core Porosity

Cause: insufficient energy density or poor powder distribution. Fix: optimise Line Speed Factor and layer thickness.

Smoking Event

Cause: uneven charge build-up in unsintered powder due to insufficient preheat or elevated O₂. Fix: extend preheat scan; check vacuum seals.

Inter-layer Delamination

Cause: abrupt cross-section change or thermal stress. Fix: re-orient part; use Powder Supports.
