Specifications

Hello Krasi, and welcome to this detailed architectural review of Blocks Technology’s heavy-duty industrial flagship: the Blocks RD50. This is a large-format FDM additive manufacturing system featuring Independent Dual Extrusion (IDEX), a structural heated build chamber, and a multi-point automatic leveling system. The RD50 is engineered for low-volume end-use parts, aerospace components, composite layups, and complex engineering prototypes using high-temperature thermoplastics. Let's break down the technical characteristics of this 125-liter build volume machine:

  • Hotend: The RD50 utilizes a swappable modular print core design.

Calibration

Configuring a large-format IDEX system like the Blocks RD50 requires alignment across three axes for two independent toolheads. Follow these 8 calibration steps:

  • Three-Point True Z Leveling Calibration:
  • Description: Before software mesh scanning, the printer must align the physical bed plane with the X/Y kinematic gantry. Run the "True Z Leveling" routine on the control screen. The print head will probe three points above the Z-axis ball screws.

Common defects

  • Hardware defects and mechanical weaknesses
  • Inactive Nozzle Oozing: While one toolhead is active, the inactive head waits in its park zone. If kept at full printing temperature, gravity causes the remaining filament to ooze out. If the wiper blade is misaligned, this ooze can transfer to the print when the toolhead activates. Solution: Enable "Standby Temperature" in your slicer to drop the inactive nozzle temperature by 30-50°C during standby, and use an ooze shield.

What it is used for

Recommended:

  • Large-Format Engineering Parts: Suitable for printing large enclosures, ducts, and structural components using ABS, ASA, and Polycarbonate.
  • Complex Geometries with Soluble Supports: The IDEX configuration allows for printing parts with internal cavities and complex overhangs using soluble support polymers (PVA, BVOH, or HIPS).
