Specifications

The Taiwanese manufacturer Layer One established a dedicated following in the delta 3D printing space with the release of the Atom 2 (as well as its subsequent iterations, such as the Atom 2.0 and the dual-material Atom 2.5 EX). This machine is characterized by outstanding engineering precision, specifically designed to overcome the traditional challenges associated with delta kinematics: mechanical backlash, frame deflection, and complex software calibration. The printer's design is focused on high-quality execution, utilizing premium materials and rigid joints to minimize vibration and structural resonance.

Calibration

Achieving accurate geometric shapes on a delta 3D printer requires meticulous calibration. In Cartesian systems, a mechanical deviation along one axis only affects that specific direction. In delta systems, however, any minor mechanical misalignment translates to non-linear distortion across all three dimensions. To configure your Atom 2 for optimal results, follow these 8 calibration steps:

  • Tower Perpendicularity Adjustment (Tower Squaring).

Common defects

  • Hardware defects and mechanical weaknesses
  • Inertial Detachment of Magnetic Rods: Under high acceleration limits (exceeding 2000 mm/s²), the inertial forces acting on the toolhead can exceed the holding power of the magnetic joints. This causes the carbon fiber rods to snap off mid-print, resulting in toolhead crashes and potential damage to the glass bed.
  • Solution: Cap the maximum acceleration in the firmware to 1500 mm/s².

What it is used for

Best applications:

  • Tall Cylindrical Enclosures and Vases: Thanks to the stationary print bed, tall and thin objects do not wobble or detach from the bed during high-speed printing, making it ideal for vases, tubes, and vertical housings.
