Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV)

The defining characteristic of a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) is its persistent physical connection: via a tether or umbilical cable: to a surface vessel, offshore platform, or shore station.

Definitional Boundaries & Taxonomy

The defining characteristic of a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) is its persistent physical connection: via a tether or umbilical cable: to a surface vessel, offshore platform, or shore station. This high-bandwidth, continuous power link sharply delineates ROVs from Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs). While AUVs rely on onboard energy and pre-programmed autonomy, ROVs are designed for heavy-duty, real-time human-in-the-loop intervention and teleoperation. The taxonomy of ROVs is strictly categorized by power output, operational depth, and payload capacity:

  1. Micro/Mini ROVs (<15 kg): DC battery or low-voltage tethered units used for shallow-water inspection, pipe crawling, and confined space access (e.g., nuclear reactor pools).
  2. Observation Class (15-100 kg): Geared toward purely visual and acoustic data gathering. Equipped with HD/4K optical sensors, multibeam sonar, and occasionally a rudimentary single-function manipulator. Depth rated typically up to 300m.
  3. Light Work Class: Utilizing high-voltage AC power transmission, capable of handling small hydraulic skids and multiple manipulators for light intervention.
  4. Heavy Work Class (up to 5000 kg): The industrial workhorses. Delivering hundreds of horsepower (typically via hydraulic power units), operating at extreme depths of 3000m to 6000m. They deploy heavy tooling like torque tools, dredge pumps, and wire rope cutters for Subsea 7 or Oceaneering operations.
  5. Trenching & Burial ROVs: Massive subsea tractors or swimming trenchers (exceeding 1 megawatt of power) that bury subsea telecommunication cables and umbilicals using high-pressure water jets or mechanical chain cutters.
