PLCs operate as rigid, highly deterministic microcontrollers executing cyclic logic scans to manage localized inputs and outputs (I/O) with millisecond precision. PACs transcend this by integrating PC-based microprocessors (e.g., ARM Cortex-A, Intel Atom) with Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS), enabling deterministic motion control, complex vision systems, and multi-domain programming. DCS represents a plant-wide, distributed intelligence paradigm where control algorithms are decentralized across multiple autonomous nodes, primarily utilized in continuous process industries (e.g., petrochemicals, power generation) where total system failure is catastrophic. SCADA serves as the overarching supervisory layer, aggregating telemetry for human-machine interface (HMI) visualization, historical data logging, and high-level setpoint transmission across massive geographical areas.
