Delta Parallel Robots

The Delta robot is an archetypal Parallel Kinematic Machine (PKM) characterized by closed-loop kinematic chains.

Definitional Boundaries & Taxonomy

The Delta robot is an archetypal Parallel Kinematic Machine (PKM) characterized by closed-loop kinematic chains. Unlike serial manipulators where each link is supported by the previous one, leading to compounded cantilever errors and massive moving inertia, the Delta robot mounts all its heavy actuators to a stationary overhead base. Three (or sometimes four) identical kinematic chains, often utilizing spatial parallelogram structures, connect the base to a mobile platform (the end-effector). This unique geometry mechanically constrains the mobile platform to purely translational movements (X, Y, Z axes) within its spatial envelope, naturally resisting rotational deviation. A central telescopic or universally-jointed shaft is frequently added to provide a fourth Degree of Freedom (DOF): rotation around the vertical Z-axis (). Taxonomically, Delta robots reside at the apex of high-speed, light-payload industrial manipulators, distinct from Stewart platforms (hexapods) which offer 6-DOF but with fundamentally different constraint matrices and much lower volumetric efficiency.
