It is engineered for high-throughput series production of complex structural metal components.

Calibration

Calibrating the SLM Solutions SLM 500 is a highly regulated process requiring specialized tools and strict inert gas procedures to maintain geometric accuracy and density across multiple lasers:

• Laser Overlap Alignment Calibration

Since 4 lasers operate simultaneously, the boundaries where their scanning fields merge (overlap zones) must be aligned with micron-level accuracy. Any offset exceeding 0.05 mm will lead to internal fusion defects and local porosity.

Common defects

• Hardware defects and mechanical weaknesses
• Optical Protection Window Contamination: During melting, metallic vapors and spatter are ejected from the melt pool. If the laminar gas flow is disrupted, these vapors condense on the quartz protection windows, attenuating the laser beams and causing lack-of-fusion defects. Solution: Clean the window optics before every build using lint-free optic wipes and replace gas recirculation filters.
