MetalFab 300 Flex

The MetalFab 300 Flex is an SLM 3D printer from Additive Industries with a 420 x 420 x 400 mm build volume.

Specifications

Light Engine: 2 × 500 W full-field fiber lasers (1070 nm): each covers the entire 420×420 mm build area, enabling full-coverage redundancy and high deposition speed.

Optics / Scanner: Galvanometric scanners with inline automated laser calibration maintaining ≤ 0.05 mm positional deviation across the full field.

Platform: Precision steel build platform with motorised Z-axis; module-swap compatible with the MetalFab automation ecosystem.

Build Volume: Base 300 × 300 × 400 mm; unlockable to 420 × 420 × 400 mm via monthly or perpetual software license: unique in the industry.

Calibration

Laser power calibration: Both lasers balanced to < 1% power deviation with Gaussian beam profile, after 8-hour thermal soak before each production campaign.

XY positional accuracy: Test plate validation: acceptance limit ≤ 0.05 mm; recalibration triggered above ±0.03 mm.

Platform levelling: Parallelism vs. recoater < 0.02 mm; mandatory after every module swap.

Common defects

Lack-of-fusion porosity: Irregular voids up to 200 µm from insufficient power or excessive scan speed: reduce speed or increase power; verify with metallographic section.

Thermal cracking: In corners and transition zones for high-anisotropy alloys (IN718): platform preheating + island scanning + post-HIP.

Balling: Spherical particles on layer surface from oxidised bath or low energy input: check O₂, replace contaminated powder.

What it is used for

Aerospace Ti-6Al-4V / IN718 components: Dual full-field lasers provide throughput for complex internal-channel parts; inline calibration supports FAA/EASA documentation.

Medical implants (ISO 13485): ≤ 0.05 mm accuracy and biomedical alloys (CoCr, Ti ELI) meet regulatory requirements.
