3D Systems DMP Factory 500: Technical Specifications

Technology and Lasers

The DMP Factory 500 uses three synchronized 500 W fiber lasers (1 070 nm) with intelligent smooth stitching scan strategies across overlap zones. This triple-laser architecture provides full coverage of a 500 × 500 mm platform with no visible zone boundaries.

Vacuum Chamber

Like the Factory 350, the system achieves <25 ppm O₂: critical for preserving the mechanical properties of Ti6Al4V and nickel superalloys across such a large build volume.

Build Volume

500 × 500 × 500 mm; layer thickness 20–60 µm. Machine weight ~8,000 kg; footprint 3,010 × 2,290 × 2,820 mm.

Modular Architecture.

Calibration

DMP Factory 500 Calibration

  • O₂ check: Evacuate and purge the chamber; all three laser zones must read <25 ppm O₂. Inspect all 4 door seals before every shift.
  • Smooth laser calibration: Print a horizontal test lattice crossing all three zones. Expect stitching deviation < 50 µm in overlap zones. If out of spec, run 3DXpert's automatic stitching procedure.
  • Recoater leveling: Verify parallelism across the 500 mm span; acceptable deviation < 30 µm.

Common defects

Common Defects on DMP Factory 500

Stitching defect: Lines or low-density zones in laser overlap regions. Cause: misaligned galvanometer heads. Fix: run 3DXpert automatic stitching calibration; check for thermal drift in optics.

Porosity: Scattered spherical pores throughout the part. Cause: insufficient energy density or oxidized powder. Fix: adjust parameters; degas powder; confirm O₂.

Thermal distortion: Geometric deviation >0.5 mm in large asymmetric parts.

What it is used for

Applications and Limitations of DMP Factory 500

Best applications:

  • Large aerospace structures: Factory 500 enables airframe sections and engine casings as a single piece instead of a welded assembly.
  • Turbine wheels in nickel superalloys: vacuum and triple-laser architecture are ideal for full-size Inconel 718 wheels.
