Animated WebP converter: what it is

This free online tool from EduFacturing turns a clip from a video (MP4, WebM and, if the browser reads it, MOV) or an animated GIF into an animated WebP and/or APNG. The result is an animated picture, not a video: no sound and no player.

Frames are taken at equal intervals from the chosen clip. A video is drawn frame by frame on a canvas; a GIF goes through the tool’s own decoder. The browser encodes each frame as WebP or PNG.

Everything happens in the browser and the file is not uploaded.

MP4 to WebP, GIF to WebP and GIF to APNG: what it does

Trims a clip and picks the frames

Start and end in seconds, in steps of 0.1. Frames per second from 1 to 30 (8 by default). The frame count never exceeds 240: beyond that the frames are spread evenly across the whole clip, and the screen shows the effective frames per second.

Scales down and sets quality

Maximum width from 32 to 1920 px (480 by default); a narrower frame is never enlarged. Quality runs from 10 to 100% (75 by default) and applies to WebP only, because APNG is lossless.

Makes WebP, APNG or both

Animated WebP is on by default. APNG is added with a tick: a larger file, but wider compatibility. If the browser cannot encode WebP, only APNG is left and the screen says so.

Shows how much was saved or grown

The finished file appears on the page with its frame count, size in px and a comparison of source size → result size, in percent saved or grown. Download it as .webp or .png.

When you need GIF to WebP or a video clip as a picture

A short clip is easier to drop in as an animated picture than as a video file.

  • A clip from a screen recording to WebP

Trim a few seconds from an MP4 or WebM and turn them into WebP at a width of 480 px.

  • GIF to WebP

Drop a GIF and get a WebP whose frames are taken at equal intervals at the frames per second you choose (8 by default). The screen shows how much was saved or how much the file grew.

  • A long recording, a timelapse

The 240-frame cap is spread across the whole clip, not just its first seconds.

  • A version for a recipient without WebP

Tick APNG too, for programs that do not show animated WebP.

How a video or GIF becomes an animated WebP

Everything starts from a plan: how many frames, at which moments and at what size.

  1. Frame plan

From the clip and the frames per second the tool works out the frame count and the moments. Above 240 frames the moments are spread evenly across the whole clip.

  2. Reading

The video jumps to each moment and the frame is drawn on a canvas at the output size. A GIF is decoded by the tool’s own decoder, and for each moment the frame whose interval contains it is taken.

  3. Encoding

The browser encodes each frame on its own. The tool only packs them into an animated WebP or an APNG.

  4. Timing

Each output frame lasts 1000 ms divided by the effective frames per second. If a GIF carries a loop count, it is kept; otherwise the output loops forever.

The formulas and rules in the tool
Applies toFormulaMeaning
Frame countn = min(240, ⌈(end − start) · fps⌉)at least 1; 3 s at 8 fps gives 24 frames, at 30 fps 90
Saved(1 − after / before) · 100before is the input file size; positive means saved; the screen shows −N% when saved and +N% when grown

Animated WebP without an upload: what is different

  • The file is not uploaded

Reading, encoding and packing happen in the browser.

  • The cap does not cut off the end

Above 240 frames the frames are spread across the whole clip.

  • Honest numbers

The screen compares the result with the source even when it grew.

What it does not do: GIF output, sound, joining videos

The output has no sound and is not a GIF: animated WebP and APNG carry no audio. The tool does not join several videos and does not keep the uneven delays of a GIF; it evens them out to the frames per second you choose. Whether a video can be read is up to the browser’s codec; if not, the screen suggests MP4 (H.264).

The size of the WebP and PNG frames depends on the browser’s encoder, so a file can differ between browsers. The cap is 240 frames.

Questions about GIF to WebP, MP4 to WebP and animated WebP

How to convert GIF to WebP?

Choose the GIF, leave animated WebP ticked and download the .webp. Frames are taken at equal intervals at the frames per second you choose (8 by default), and the screen shows how much was saved or grown.

How to convert MP4 to WebP?

Choose the MP4 (or WebM), trim the clip, pick the frames per second and the width, and download the .webp. The result is an animated picture with no sound.

Can I convert a video to GIF?

Not with this tool: the output is an animated WebP or APNG, not a GIF, and it has no sound. WebP is on by default, and APNG is added with a tick.

Is WebP better than GIF?

It depends on the file, so the screen compares the source size with the result size, in percent saved or grown. Quality runs from 10 to 100% (75 by default) and applies to WebP only.

When should I pick APNG over WebP?

When the recipient may not show animated WebP. APNG is lossless and more widely compatible, at the cost of a larger file. The quality slider has no effect on APNG.

Is my video uploaded?

No. Frames are read, encoded and packed in the browser.
