3D printed QR code generator: a relief plate from your own link

Enter a link or text and get a plate with a raised QR code, ready for your slicer. You set the width, module height and base thickness, and the tool warns when one module is too small to print in filament (FDM). Download an STL or 3MF.

What a 3D printed QR code is

A 3D printed QR code generator builds a plate with the QR code as relief: the dark modules (the small squares of the code) rise above the base. This free tool from EduFacturing makes a 3D QR code from your link or text and gives an STL or 3MF for the slicer.

What matters most is the size of one module. At a width of 50 mm and a 25×25 code it is 2 mm; below 1.5 mm the tool warns in yellow, below 0.8 mm (the FDM minimum wall) in red.

QR code to STL: size, margin and invert

Builds a raised code from your link or text

Type an address or text and choose correction L, M, Q or H. A higher level gives more modules: for https://edufacturing.com 25×25 at L and M, 29×29 at Q and H.

Sets the sizes in millimetres

Code width from 20 to 120 mm, module height from 0.6 to 5 mm, base from 0.8 to 5 mm. The base is larger than the code, with a margin of 4 modules on every side.

Measures the module and warns

It shows the module count and the size of one module in mm, and a yellow or red message appears when it is too small.

Inverts the code for two-colour printing

Invert raises the light modules instead of the dark ones. You download an STL or 3MF and see the triangle count under the preview.

When to 3D print a QR code instead of a sticker

A raised code is for cases where a paper sticker tears, fades or does not fit.

  • A sign with a link to a menu or a site

A plate for a table, a shelf or a wall that does not tear like a sticker.

  • A WiFi card for guests

You paste a ready WiFi text like WIFI:T:WPA;S:name;P:password;; into the field and guests scan the plate.

  • A business card or a gift

A small plate with a link to a portfolio or a profile.

  • A marking on a machine

A code to an instruction, printed once.

How the module size is calculated and when a warning appears

Three steps: the text becomes a grid of modules, every dark module becomes a box on a base, the module size is compared with two thresholds.

  1. The text becomes a grid

The code is built at the chosen level; the module count depends on the text length and the level.

  2. Boxes on a base

Every dark module is a box of the set height, on a plate with a margin of 4 modules on every side. With Invert, the light modules are the boxes.

  3. The module size

The width divided by the module count gives the module size in mm. It is compared with 1.5 mm (the recommended minimum) and 0.8 mm (the FDM minimum wall).

The formulas the tool uses
Applies toFormulaMeaning
Module sizem = W / nW is the code width (20 to 120 mm), n is the modules per side; at 50 mm and 25 modules m is 2 mm
Base sizeB = (n + 8) · ma margin of 4 modules on every side; at n = 25 and W = 50 mm the base is 66 × 66 mm
Warningsm < 0.8 mm red · m < 1.5 mm yellowexactly 1.5 mm gives no warning; 0.8 mm is the FDM threshold

What is different about this QR code STL generator

  • The module is a number, not a guess

You see how many mm one module is and get a warning before you print.

  • The base comes with its margin

The margin of 4 modules is part of the base, so you do not add it in the slicer.

  • Two-colour printing by changing filament

The modules start at the height of the base: add a filament change in the slicer at that height. Invert switches which modules are raised.

Will a 3D printed QR code scan? What the tool does not do

It does not guarantee that the printed code will scan: it measures only the module size. In a single filament the contrast comes from the shadow under side lighting, so print a small plate and try it with two phones.

There is no engraved mode: the dark modules are raised, and Invert raises the light ones, with the margin staying level with the base. The boxes only stand on the base, with no union, the mesh is not checked, and the file has no colours.

It takes text only. Beyond the capacity (for ordinary text 2331 bytes at M, 1273 at H; Cyrillic fits about half) the screen shows a message and builds no code: the download buttons are disabled.

Questions about 3D printing a QR code

How to 3D print a QR code?

Type the link or text, choose the correction level and sizes, then download an STL or 3MF and open it in your slicer. The base prints at the bottom, the modules are the relief on top.

Can you 3D print a QR code?

Yes, as a plate with a raised code. The tool checks the module size, not the scan: print a small plate and try it with a phone.

How to make a two-colour 3D printed QR code?

Download the file and change the filament in the slicer at the height of the base (1.5 mm by default): the base in one colour, the modules in a contrasting one. Invert raises the light modules instead of the dark ones.

How small can you 3D print a QR code?

Down to a module of 1.5 mm, the tool's recommended minimum; it shows red below 0.8 mm, the FDM minimum wall. At 50 mm wide and 25 modules, a module is 2 mm.

Will a 3D printed QR code scan?

Not guaranteed. The tool measures the module but does not scan. In one filament only the shadow gives contrast, so print a small test plate first.

Is the 3D printed QR code generator free?

Yes, it is free, with no account and no daily limit.
